"Woman with a phobia of supermarkets died after fall outside Co-Op

A woman who had a fear of supermarkets died after collapsing outside a Co-Op store.
Shannon Little, 43, of Deerfern Close, Great Linford sustained brain injuries when she fell to the ground as she left the Co-Op on her estate at 5.30pm on October 25.
She had a history of panic attacks in small supermarkets.Paramedics were called to the scene where they had to restrain Mrs Little, who had become agitated. She was taken to Milton Keynes hospital but died later that night. Her brain had swelled due to bruising.
Husband John said: "Her conditions, her anxieties, often manifested themselves in supermarkets. That size of shop seemed to have an adverse effect on her."The fact that the fatal accident occured outside a small supermarket would be in keeping with this. Her panic attacks were prevelant in supermarkets so the fact that it was a supermarket, for me, was not a surprise."
Mrs Little, who has a 15-year-old daughter, also had bruising on the right side of her face. She had reported an assault to police three days before on October 22 in which she alleged two males punched her and grabbed her handbag outside a supermarket in Neath Hill.
But she decided not to pursue it further. After she died, police re-opened the case as a manslaughter investigation in case her death was related to injuries sustained in the alleged attack. But consultant pathologist Dr Hunt said: "There was no evidence of any injury to the brain that was older than 48 hours."
Police were unable to find evidence of the assault on CCTV or through witness appeals and closed the case.Toxicology tests showed Mrs Little was not intoxicated when she fell. Dr Hunt said she may have fainted or might have been having a fit due to alcohol withdrawal.Doctors considered transferring her to specialist neurological wards elsewhere but were unable to find a bed.
Mr Little said: "I really feel they did the best they could have done." Dr Hunt said: "Her injuries were of a severe nature, not the type you would expect recovery from." Deputy Coroner Tom Osbourne recorded a verdict of accidental death."
